Do you seriously think I’d want a coffee?" laughs Dr Gillian McKeith, expressing mock outrage as she takes a seat in a Covent Garden brasserie. As the waiter is sent off with a request for a pot of peppermint tea instead, I’m glad I ordered sparkling water rather than anything laced with caffeine.

Meeting McKeith, nutritionist, author and presenter of Channel 4’s You Are What You Eat, is enough to put anyone on their best behaviour. Her no-nonsense approach to diet and exercise has become the stuff of legend, and when the participants of her TV show manage to revolutionise their eating habits, you can’t help wondering if it’s because they’re absolutely terrified of her.
