| When Peter Lalor's great-great grandson asked the Ballarat Council in 1979 to fly the flag of the Southern Cross to mark the 125th anniversary of the battle of the Eureka Stockade, he was knocked back. "They said no, there was too much opposition to it," said Mr Lalor, who shares the name of the man who led rebellious miners in their crusade against unjust taxes in Victoria. A lot has changed in 25 years. Now the Ballarat Council flies the Southern Cross every day of the year and the flag features on the council's stationery.
