To me the solution to poverty has a simple formula. If people enjoy health, education and peace, then it is only natural that an upward spiral of opportunity comes into existence. If given the chance then I am convinced that everyday people can do extraordinary things. I can see it, imagine it and feel with all my heart that it is true. But doe this mean it is absolute truth?
There are many people who base their whole lives and belief systems on books written by other people. For many of these people they will never waiver from these beliefs no matter what evidence to the contrary presents itself to them. Worse still they will criticise beliefs which contradict those of what they read in their books, again without knowledge or research of the other persons belief. How can their truth be absolute truth when their capacity to think for themselves has effectively shutdown?
Political parties and politicians decide on their policies which becomes their mantra. Few will sway from this mantra no matter what new information comes to light or circumstances change. This is especially true, when all too often, ulterior motives exist. How can their truth be for the betterment of those they are supposed to represent?
Everybody seams to have a truth. Many seam to stem from good intentions and yet few are willing to put their truth to the test. There can be a perceived safety in believing in ones truth. A false safety which can cloud the mind of all reason. Without scrutiny and analysis of ones truth, one is creating an oxymoron when using the word truth.
As I said, I could see, imagine and feel with all my heart the truth that I came to of how to fix the debilitating poverty that currently grips our planet. But the more research I did on how to implement my truth, the more I saw that the very problems I wished to fix were borne from other peoples truth gone terribly wrong.
From imperialist conquests, religious self-righteousness, psychopath warlords, to deluded do-gooders, the story is the same. People imposing their truths, absent of scrutiny and devoid of meaningful dialog that could avert the pending catastrophe.
We stand at an important cross road in history. Chaos reigns, but there is an ever increasing number of compassionate, free thinking people, armed with the advantage of knowledge and relative freedom, that provide us with hope for the future. There exists a real opportunity to see in this generation a world where human rights reign and resources are shared in a more equitable fashion.
But with every opportunity, there is the possibility of failure and of even making the current bad situation worse. Thats why it should be the responsibility of civil society to ensure the truths we hold as the basis of implementing positive change, be developed transparently and with intelligent dialog.
Through a time of massive change, civil society has done a good job of developing it's truths in an open and transparent way. As more and more people realise change is necessary and hence sometimes differing opinions arise, the challenge will be to bring the differing ideas and opinions together into a broad ideology that can unite us all.
Unity is a dream for many, impossible for others, but can be a reality if civil society can facilitate the forum for ideas to be cultivated with dialog and scrutiny.
Perhaps even absolute truth is possible? We will see.
